EpiPen - New Design For Ease of Use and Transport

Many people sensitive to food and insect allergies are requested to carry 24/7 an injectable dose of epinephrine (commonly called the EpiPen). This is in case there is an acute serious allergic reaction, sometimes minutes can be the difference between life and death.

To date, many sensitive individuals have a tendency to not carry their EpiPen. Common reasons given include:

  1. Size: the EpiPen is cumbersome because of its large size
  2. Difficult for a layman to use: if you were not trained on its operation, many people can not figure out how to make it work
  3. Accidental discharge is highly likely into the thumb of the person giving the injection when trying to figure out its operation
  4. Apathy: many sensitive people have the attitude I have never needed it before so I will be careful and stay safe now.

New Design: Easier To Use

The founder of TCB Medical Devices, a Dr.Thomas Beller M.D., has seen the growth of severe allergies also and has studiously spent the last five years trying to develop an alternative. His dream was to find a better way to make this life-saving piece of equipment more user friendly. He has now developed the Epinephrine Key.

The new device is a small hand-held injectable piece which can be placed on your keychain for easy transport. When it is needed, a simple process of removing the safety cap, release a safety button and pressing the point into the sufferer's leg will release the life-saving dose of medication. Quick, easy to use, and less chance of a missed dose because lack of knowledge resulted in accidental discharge into the wrong person.

Currently, not yet available to the public market because of pending FDA approval, indicators do seem favorable that this device will be made available before the end of this year, 2010. Hopefully ease of transport and ease of use will convince many more individuals of the necessity of having one on their possession at all times.
