Nine Neighborhood Poems: from Donkeyland [Poems out of Minnesota]

I. The Mockers: Winter and Summer

Winter, the gray mocker of death;

Lamps

Summer, the rose that never wept,

Come both with me, whisper--

The soft silver harvest

Of your seasons; come touch

My face with snow and sun

For you are the unanswerable ones.

#1512 10/17/2006

II. Between two Houses

Between two houses

The wired fence stood

And the trees and chimneys

And the heat and the light

And the hot, hot summer

Was there.

My prayers were said

And the neighbors were at rest

And the night allowed us to sleep

And the presence of mother's voice

Was overall....

Note: When I was growing up, wherever one is, simple tings are remembered, when they get older, so it has been with me, and the voice of another, a neighbors house, sounds and images, one never things will arise, do. #1513

III. Across the Street

Night, from an attic bedroom window

Is a gray, dark thing?

Street lamps reflecting railroad cars

Broken across the street;

My brother's quivering under his covers,
Says: "Go back to sleep!"

#1514

IV. Empty Lot

In the middle of summer

In the empty lot

Next to grandpa's house

(where I lived with my brother and mom)

We'd play softball (reckless days of my youth);

Eager was everyone thereafter

With their wilds wishes and all.

#1515

V. Cemetery Whispers

(Oakland Cemetery, St. Paul, Minnesota)

Over the cemetery fence we went

As if the dead were calling us;

The graves whispered--yet, voiceless

(perhaps just in my mind)) but--deaf I wasn't):

As a result, the shadows flickered

In the light of the moon, made the earth groan

Under my wobbly feet...

As I put my lips to the bottles of brew,

Splattering it here and there,

As the sea of dead continued to whisper.

Note: we really were not bad kids back then, not compared to what kids do nowadays; we were bored out of our minds, needed a placed to get drunk, and the cemetery for a few years looked the place to do it (especially when you are 15, 16 and 17-years old). #1516

VI. Left (1968)

Most everyone loved Chick on our city block (neighborhood)

So we all loved a wild, infatuated boy,

Who played a guitar and wrote poetry:

Nobody is sure where he went, and why...

A few folks perhaps, but no one is saying.

A singer, dancer, karate man, soldier, poet, lover.

He broke a lot of hearts, and he felt the pain likewise!

I wonder if anyone remembers him at the bar?

Or knows where he's gone to--I doubt it.

#1516

VII. Donkeyland--Sunset

I remember the last day in the neighborhood; it was in the year 1968.
After that day, I'd never return to stay--(I'd follow the sunset; travel

we world).

The day had a gleam of light to it, and in my body a hesitation, the air

was cool, it was April.

I didn't realize then, I'd remember so well, and keep so many photos in

my mind (I suppose I was getting ready for San Francisco, leaving

the Midwest behind).

I remember her long (my neighborhood): hearts that escape you, corners that hate you; life there for many, have gone from roses to

ashes; harsh and trampled are her streets: "Donkeyland,' they call

her, who never weeps.

Note: Our neighborhood was called Donkeyland by the St. Paul Police; nicknamed by a police officer called Howey (or Howe; not sure of the correct spelling) who used to comb Cayuga Street, and the rest of the neighborhood back in the late 50s and 60s. #1517

VIII. Mrs. Stanley

She sits on her porch and knits

Bending at the window-sill

With old, old waxed fingers

Smiling away

(my old neighbor)Mrs. Stanley)

Now forenoon has come

She switches to another window

(still on that little porch)

Looking down now, to the street

(I'm but fifteen)

"Doesn't she have anything else to do?'

I say...

I look at her again, her face

Through the drapes

She seems homeless

In that big house (I think).

#1518

IX. God Saw Death (7/1/2003)) 10:55 PM))

Perhaps death is gift from God, my mother wished it, when I came to the hospital to visit that is; she was tired of living she said, knowing after her last operation life would not be the same.

I remember quite well, she was afraid to turn on the stove, lest she forget to turn it off I suppose, especially if I was gone (not sue what happened, or went wrong, but perhaps something, I'll never know).

She even dreamt of going back home, we lived together, her downstairs, me, upstairs, and when she learned she never would, she didn't feel any loner she belonged here on earth, she had to go she knew, and she left.

Homemade Garden Lights

Solar powered garden lights are one of the most economical and eco friendly power sources you can look for in a DIY project. All the components that are required can be readily sourced from an electronics or hardware shop.

Recycling old garden lights

Lamps

Opening up an old solar garden light will show you what components to look for. These are very simple devices and can be all assembled within a glass jar. The tools required are a craft knife, a screw driver and a hot glue gun.

The rest is simple. Using the old garden light as a guide assemble all the components in the jar in that order and an economical garden light can easily be made at home. It's a cheap and fun way to recycle old garden lights.

Building a garden light from scratch

Yet another quick and easy garden light that's ideal for lighting up various areas of the garden can be made up of lithium coin batteries and white LEDs.

The long wires of the LED are taped to the negative and positive sides of the coin battery (+) and (-). Carefully twist the wires, ensuring they won't touch each other, into a right angled position which will enable to the battery to rest flat against the inside cover of a glass jar. Tape the battery in place and screw on the jar.

These little lights will add interest to an evening garden party and are quite cheap to make. The only problem with these is that they stay lit and the only way to turn them off is to separate the battery from the LED.

Paper lanterns

Beautiful paper lanterns can be made at home and can adorn a patio or be hung up on trees. These lanterns can either hold candles or LEDs. However, a word of warning: when lighting candles within paper lanterns it can pose a fire hazard and should be done with the utmost caution. It is far better to use LEDs, as explained earlier.

The framework for the lanterns can be constructed out of bamboo skewers and the coloured paper previously cut with an added margin is then glued on.

Circular lanterns can be constructed with stiff wire rings and strips of stiff handmade paper can be laced on to the wire rings for added effect. Alternatively intricately cut lacy designs fashioned from decorative paper can also be used to cover the bamboo frames by gluing them on.

How to Build a Basketball Court In Your Own Yard

Some people dream of becoming a doctor, a pilot, or a teacher while others dream of becoming a professional basketball player. If you are entertaining high hopes for yourself or your son in entering a professional league, you need to start practicing as early as possible and all the important basketball training in this world always start at the backyard.

There are two ways for you to build your own basketball court: you can do it from scratch or simply purchase a DIY basketball court kit.

Lamps

Starting from Scratch

Skills - You need to have intermediate carpentry skills to successfully build your own basketball court from scratch. Firstly, you have to make sure that the ground you'll be building your basketball court on has a smooth even surface to prevent accidents and decrease the risk of injury. Secondly, you'll need to build your own basketball ring. Thirdly, you'll need to paint your own court lines.

Costs - It's possible that you'll enjoy lower costs when it comes to building your own basketball court from scratch. Most DIY basketball court kits include flooring, which would just be an unnecessary expense if you already have an appropriate floor surface for your basketball court. You can also choose your own materials for your basketball stand and ring and even painting materials and ensure that you'll pay less for them.

Production Time - Of course, building your own basketball court from scratch will take a longer time than it would with a DIY kit. This is because instead of simply having to assemble things only as is such the case with a DIY kit, it's entirely a different procedure when you're determined to build one from scratch.

Firstly, you'll have to take appropriate measurements. Secondly, you'll have to go shopping for the necessary materials and tools before you can finally get on to the building part.

Material Sources - You may have a difficult time procuring the required materials for your project especially if you're looking for things that are only sold wholesale in the market.

Using a DIY Basketball Court Kit
Model - Make sure that you're purchasing the correct DIY basketball court kit. Most DIY basketball court kits differ according to court dimensions and whether or not it adheres to NBA or collegiate standards or the likes. Check also if the kit is for half or full court models.

Skills - Basic or moderate building skills are all that's necessary to get your basketball court assembled. You will need however to read instructions carefully and thoroughly because the assembly process leaves no room for errors. Skipping a step can spell danger for you in the long run as it compromises the safety of your basketball court.

Cost - Expect to spend a small amount of money on a DIY basketball kit, although this is certainly money well spent because DIY kits include absolutely everything you need to make your basketball court entirely professional and fit for the NBA!

Tips on Installing Poles for Your Basketball Court
Whether you're building your own basketball court from scratch or using a DIY kit, you'll basically undergo the same process in properly installing your pole.

Firstly, you need to dig an appropriately sized hole for the foundation of your basketball pole. At least one foot and three inches of your basketball pole must be set underneath to ensure its stability. Once you've secured the pole's position, cover the hole with concrete. Make sure it's completely filled and doesn't have any air pockets. Afterwards, fill the pole with concrete as well. When that's done, check if the pole is plumb positioned accurately.

Important Measurements for Basketball Court Building
The NBA and NCAA are both using the same court dimensions: ninety-four feet in length and fifty feet in width. High school basketball courts use the same width but a shorter length at eighty-four feet. Junior high basketball courts are seventy-four feet in length and forty-two feet in width.

Regardless of whether you're using an NBA, NCAA, or Junior High basketball court, you should concentrate more on honing your son's skills in basic basketball skills like dribbling and shooting if you want him fully prepared for a professional basketball career. But most important of all is to ensure that you and your son have fun playing. Shoot for your dreams!

What is a Good Gift for a Japanese Wedding?

If you have been invited to a Japanese themed wedding, you may want to give a gift that is in the same vein as the theme. Maybe you have been invited to a traditional Japanese wedding ceremony and you want to give the typical gift that is expected. There is also gift giving involved within the bride and grooms families and this is usually done at a formal dinner on a "most auspicious" day that is chosen from the Japanese almanac. These gifts are called "Yui-no" or engagement gifts.

A Wedding Gift for a Traditional Japanese Wedding Ceremony and Reception

Lamps

If you have been invited to a true, authentic Japanese wedding, the traditional gift that is given to the newly married couple is typically cash. This is what is called Oshugi. The amount you are expected to give will depend upon the depth of your relationship with the marrying couple. The Oshugi you are expected to give is often written on the wedding invitation. If you are in doubt about what amount you should give, a good figure for friends of the pair is 30,000 yen or 0 American dollars.

Gifts for a Wedding with a Japanese Theme

A wonderful gift that will be long appreciated could be a bonsai tree. Not only is a bonsai tree a thing of beauty, it must be cared for and perhaps this could be an activity that the newlyweds can share in order to spend quality time together. Another excellent choice would be a soup serving set complete with spoons. They are sure to enjoy eating their soup with authentic Japanese utensils and are bound to think of you when they do.

A terrific idea for the couple that appreciates Japanese culture is a gift certificate to their favorite Hibachi or Sushi restaurant. This can be another gift that requires that the couple spend quality time with each other in order to best enjoy it. A Daruma doll is thought to be a symbol of protection and good luck in Japan. Typically this doll is given at the beginning of a new venture. A sand garden is also another excellent choice for a gift to give at a Japanese themed wedding. It is thought that the placing of the stones and the raking of the sand can calm even the most restless mind and relieve stress. This may be important for a couple as a way to soothe any stressful feelings they experience, as they embark on forging a life together and come upon the inevitable bumps in the road.

Do It Yourself Auto Body Repair - It's Easier Than You Think

Everyone has done it. You back into a pole, rear end a stray shopping cart or drop a heavy object on the trunk lid. The result is an ugly dent or a scraped finish. Turning in small damage claims to your insurance can be costly and if you have gotten an auto body repair estimate, you know that parts and labor can be expensive to pay out of pocket. There is another option though, you can fix it yourself. That's right. Armed with a plunger, a bottle of touch up paint and a few supplies, the average do-it-yourselfer can repair small dents and scratches. Here's how.

Unsightly Dents

Lamps

If your accident has not broken the finish and has damaged a larger body panel, you may be able to pull the dent out. Dump a bucket of soapy water over the dent and stick your household plunger over the area. The water should help create a good seal and you may be able to pull the panel back into shape. The soap will allow you to slide the plunger down the panel to break the suction.

If your dent is in a small area near a crease in the vehicle, you can place a small block of wood at the tip of the dent and gently tap the wood with a mallet to force the misplaced metal back into its original shape. Tapping gently around the edges of the dent may help pop the metal back into shape. Use care not to break the finish, chipped paint exposes bare metal which will rust.

Scratches, Scrapes and Stone Chips

Most body shops will sell you a bottle of touch up paint. They will also ask you what you are repairing and offer to fix it for a large fee. Kindly decline, and request just a bottle of touch up paint. They will need access to you vehicle to get the manufacturer's paint code. This is most often found in the glove box or the door jam. If your vehicle has been painted a different hue than its original paint color, the auto body technician can use an educated guess to mix your paint to match the rest of the finish closely.

You will need a fine grit sand paper, a bucket of soapy water, some wax and buffing cloths in addition to your bottle of paint. Wash the scraped area well with soapy water, paying special attention to any bugs or tar in the area. Wet your fine grit sand paper and carefully sand the edges of the scrape or stone chip, making sure to keep your sand paper wet. Dry the area well and leave it sit for at least ten minutes to make sure it dries completely. Then, shake the bottle of touch up paint for at least two minutes. Brush on a light coat of paint over the damaged area. You can always apply a second coat after the first coat dries. Allow the paint to cure overnight then use a rubbing compound followed by a coat of wax to protect your finish

Paint repairs fare the best when done on a sunny day with low humidity. If this is not possible in your area, perform the repairs inside a heated building with a dehumidifier running. You can also use heat lamps or a hair dryer on its lowest setting to help cure the paint.

With a few tools and a little know how, you can save yourself some money by repairing small damages yourself.

Real Free Stuff - An Insiders Guide to Getting Free Product Samples

Everyone has heard the old expression "There is no such thing as a free lunch." The idea of getting something for free online automatically has any one with the slightest bit of skepticism asking what the catch is. Is it really possible to get stuff for free online without giving over any billing information at all? The short answer is yes, it is possible. You really can get free samples of shampoo, makeup, toothpaste, soap and virtually anything the average person uses. Many times large brand name companies will run legitimate free sample offers on their websites. To request a sample you only need to fill in your information and hit submit. They will have a designated number of free samples to distribute and it will be first come first serve. They wont charge for shipping, and will send you free samples of their products in the mail.

What's the catch?

Lamps

The catch is that you can never truly be sure if a sample you request will actually show up. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. There are several factors that play into if a free sample will actually be sent to you. The first and most important factor is supply. Companies have a limited supply of free samples to give out so when they reach that number there might be thousands of people who still haven't gotten their sample. Also another factor that will play into whether or not a sample will arrive is location. The cost of shipping gets higher for the companies giving out the samples the further away they have to ship them. So, almost every free sample offer is limited to a certain geographic region (mostly North America).

Avoiding Scams

Scams, fake offers, SPAM, call it what you will the end result is the same. There are sites that claim something is free and either by cleverly worded fine print or straight out lying never really send anything to anyone for free. Spotting scam freebies at first can be tricky but once you learn the things to look for it's really just common sense. How much does the product being offered cost? If it's more than a few dollars chances are that it's fake. There is no such thing as a free iPod or laptop. Also, look at the homepage of the site offering the free sample. What business are they in, does it make sense for their company to have samples of the product they are offering? For example: if a site about ringtones is offering free shampoo it's most likely a scam. But if it's an online cosmetics store that's offering small samples of their cheapest lip gloss there's a better chance that it's real. Also ask yourself if the information the site is asking for makes sense. Are they saying they are going to mail you something but not asking for your address? There are exceptions but generally most real free samples will ask for your email address, name, mailing address, and phone number.

Avoiding Junk mail

Another thing to keep in mind is spam and junk mail. Unfortunately it's unavoidable when attempting to get freebies. Even legitimate free samples will still keep you on their mailing lists long after they send your sample. In fact in most cases it's the reason they offer something free in the first place. But this is easy to manage if you know how. First set up a separate e-mail address that you will only use for requesting free samples. You can't give a fake e-mail address because you will have to click links in confirmation e-mails before they will mail to you. Next, think up a pseudonym and use it as your name when you are requesting freebies. The fake name is helpful because it makes sorting junk mail easy, and keeps your real name off those pesky commercial mailing lists.

Where to look

Now that you know the basics of how real free samples work, it's time to cover how to find them. There are many different sites that all serve the same purpose, finding real free samples and letting their visitors know where they are. It is important to understand that these freebie sites are not the party actually offering the free samples. The websites you will become familiar with will actually be more like the yellow pages making the freebies easy to find. How do they find the freebies for their site you might ask? By checking out what the other freebie sites are linking to. What this means is that real freebies spread very very quickly. One freebie site will find a sample and post a link to it. Then 2 more freebie sites will see that link and put one on their own site, then 4 more from there, and so on until it's on every freebie site. There really is no ONE freebie site that you should use. But rather you should get familiar with them and pick out 2-3 freebie sites to check regularly for new samples to request. Finding these sites is as easy as doing a Google search for 'free samples', 'freebies', 'free stuff', etc...

Playing the numbers game

On average no less than 80% of the free samples you try to request will never show up for one of the reasons listed above. This means that requesting only one or two freebies wont be enough to swing the odds in your favor. Instead visit your favorite freebie sites every day and request every single new freebie you see. On average there are no more than 7-10 new freebies available daily. This may sound very time consuming but there is a great trick to automate requesting free samples. All you need to do is download and install Google toolbar. It's virus free and wont mess up your computer. Once you have Google toolbar installed go into it's options then go to the the "auto-fill" tab. There you will be able to type in your fake name from earlier, your real address, and your separate e-mail address and save all of it.

Then when you are on a website asking for that information you only need to click the auto-fill button on Google toolbar and the request form will be filled out for you automatically! This means that without auto-fill it may take over an hour to request 10 free samples, but with it that same amount of request could take under 5 mins. Then it's just a matter of setting aside 5-10 mins every day to request every new sample you see. If you are consistent about it you will have more than enough requests to swing the odds in your favor. Then your daily visits to your mail box will be like an exciting free sample lottery. Some days you'll win and there will be a freebie for you. Other days there will be nothing. But it's always exciting and you never know what you are going to get!
